How to Create a Rock Solid Mindset: More Than Just Being Positive
Disclaimer Alert!
Before we get started I should mention that I’m that person who doesn’t let negativity bother him, and who focuses on the positives that life throws at me. Being positive isn’t something I do consciously, but it does affect everything I do.
Now, before I lose you completely, I do know that life’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Please don’t misunderstand me.
This mindset has been a part of who I am for as long as I can remember. I never really “got” why people would settle for anything less … though I didn’t spend much time thinking about that either.
It wasn’t until a few years ago that I was able to pinpoint that this thought process was a complete mindset shift for a lot of people. It was very enlightening and gave me a whole new appreciation for how we all live our day-to-day lives.
What happened to give me this shift??
Mentorfish
My wife and I attended an event with Keith Kochner, founder of Mentorfish. If you’ve never heard of Keith or his great community, their mandate is to help everyone live their greatest life. I highly recommend checking out the great work they do HERE.
At this event, Keith asked the audience the following …
“Do the events that occur in your life affect the outcome of your life?”
Most people were agreeing that yes, the events in your life help determine your outcome.
What Keith said next was what provided my shift:
“The events of your life are just events. They hold no meaning in the real world. It’s the story you tell yourself about those events that determines the power they hold in your life.”
You Just Don’t Get It
“Bruce, you just don’t get it …”
Is that what you’re thinking?
I have a quick story to share, and hopefully it opens your eyes as it did mine. Now, I don’t exactly know how true the story is, but the lesson remains.
A young reporter did 2 separate interviews with well-known entertainers, and asked them both about the feelings that rush through their bodies right before going on stage.
The first entertainer responded that he’s a mess right before going on. His hands get clammy, pulse starts racing, heart is beating in his throat … it’s all he can do to push through the paralyzing nervous energy to take the stage!
The second entertainer’s response left the interviewer at a loss for words: His hands get clammy, pulse starts racing, heart is beating in his throat … it’s all he can do to contain his excitement before rushing onto the stage!
Same events.
Different meaning placed on those events.
Different mindset.
Feed Your Mind Daily
Getting your mindset in check is much more than being positive.
Yes, being positive is important. It’s a vital first step that you can take on your own.
What stories can you re-frame in your mind to give yourself a better outcome?
– Did you lose a subscriber, or did you simply find someone who wasn’t really in your target niche?
– Is nobody interested in what you have to say, or have you just not yet reached your tipping point?
– Are the days getting shorter and colder, or is it the perfect time for a vacation?
Creating a rock solid mindset requires daily food from multiple sources. The sooner you get some help, the easier it’ll become.
Here are the 5 best ways I have found to grow your mindset and make being positive into something natural:
1. Surround yourself with the “right people”
Your mindset is a powerful thing, and you must protect it. This is not an easy exercise, but you need to figure out how to limit contact with certain people in your life so you can expand contact with others.
2. Monitor what you read, watch and listen to
Fill your space with the stories and information that help you move forward on your mindset journey. Don’t let anything in that takes away from where you’re headed.
3. Tune out the negativity
We are all constantly bombarded by information trying to get our attention. Create your own bubble. I learned this important lesson from Success Mentor, Darren Hardy. I’m not saying that you should be uninformed with issues that matter … just make sure they matter TO YOU. Then take it a step further and make sure that you’re in a position to do something about the issue. If it either doesn’t matter to you or you can’t help the situation, you need to tune it out and let those who can affect it do their jobs.
4. Set up a daily mindset feed
Find a daily podcast or coaching call that you can tune into, preferably every morning. If you’re not sure where to find one, you can check out the one my wife and I use HERE.
5. Find the right mentors
Yes that’s a plural on mentorS. No one person is perfect to mentor you in every aspect of our life. Whether it’s goal planning, your online business, finances, or something else, make sure you’re growing in every area because your mindset will be affected by all of them. Again, if you’re not sure where to start I’d be happy to connect you with my mentoring community HERE.

Thanks so much Carly!
Great tips! Especially the plural on “mentors.” Not everyone is good at everything, and we should always take inspiration from different people and places.
Thanks Nina, you’re so right that multiple inspiration points are important
LOVED your tips, absolutely tie in seamlessly after creating a positive mindset. Love the difference in mindset noted as a contrast between performers!! Thanks!
You’re very welcome Chondra, glad you enjoyed that story
LOVED This Bruce! Especially this quote:
The events of your life are just events. They hold no meaning in the real world. It’s the story you tell yourself about those events that determines the power they hold in your life.
Please keep doing more mindset posts!
Dr. Lisa
Thanks so much Dr Lisa … that quote really changed how I looked at the events in my own life so I’m glad it impacted you too
Hey Bruce,
Great post.
If I may, I’d like to add one to your list.
Get the negatives words out of your vocabulary. Ie: Can’t, don’t, won’t, shouldn’t, couldn’t, etc…
If a person isn’t able to prep himself/herself up every morning and throughout the day, the rest will falter.
Thoughts?
Love that addition and totally agree with you, thanks so much for sharing it Joel!
Yes, it really helps feeding our minds with what we want to achieve. The more we do it, the more we’re getting ourselves closer to accomplishing it.
Absolutely Jelena, thanks for sharing that
I love this: “Find the right mentors.” I’ve never known the value of running my business until I had the right mentors. They helped my cut my learning curve and get results within a short period of time.
Absolutely Sherri … I used to be the person who tried to go it alone and have since realized mentors are the way to go
Great post, Bruce! I just tweeted your quote about events and your story. Motivational! 🙂
Thanks so much Theresa, glad you received value from this post
Awesome positive energy post Bruce. Someone once told me this about negative thoughts and words “they’re just words or thoughts, they’re not facts”, and she was right! Thanks for sharing !t!
You’re so right Demetri, thanks for adding that!
This is some very solid training. I agree you have to constantly feed your mind positive information and tune out the negative stuff. Surrounding yourself with the right people is another big key. You can’t help but be successful when that’s all you have around you. Great share, thanks!
Absolutely agree Dereco, so glad you enjoyed this post
